GREAT TURNOUT AT SUNDAY’S KAYAK RACE!

Paddlers at Plum Beach

The weather was beautiful, perhaps not for the hard core paddlers up in the front, as it meant they had to paddle harder and work for the teasing little waves to find a bit of surf. But for the rest of us, who are still getting the hang of staying in our surf ski boats, the calm waters and gentle breeze on our backs was a God send. Check out the results.

…and a word from Stuart Knaggs, the organizer of the event:

“The South of the Island Surfski race was held today, with the start at outside Chesterfields Resturant in Philips burg and finishing in Plum Bay on the Lowlands, for a distance of 14.5km.  There was also a short course of 8.5km from Kim sha beach to Plum Bay.  The tropical wave that passed over us unfortinately sucked all the wind and swell away so the paddlers were faced with a hot, flat paddle.  No matter, we had a great turnout of 24 boats for this last long distance event before the Soualiga Challenge.

JP Piscione showed that he is still boss by winning the race in 1:21:12, a healthy 4:54 ahead of Frits Bus who is working very hard on a win on the surfski.  A special mention must be made of the new paddlers MAry Wrigley, Alex Frye and Alyssa VAn Den Bosch, who came in from the Learn 2 Paddle program for their first race and finished the short distance race in good style.

And of course, a big thank you to all the helpers and to Prime distributors for providing drinks and snacks after the race.

Stuart
